The Hammarby Runic Memorial Stone: Combat, Marriage, and Memory

Upplands Runic Inscription 277 (U 277), a runic stone, is housed in the backyard of Hammarby apotek, along Stockholm's Road in Upplands Väsby, Sweden. The stone was placed there in 1903, and its original location is unclear. The inscription plaque at the site maintains that the inscriptions on U 273, U 276, and U 277 are all connected to the same family – the Hammarby family. Kætilgærðr, who is honored on U 277, erected the stone in remembrance of her husband, Assur. Ulf, another individual on U 277, raised the stone in memory of another man, Biorn. The inscriptions on U 273 and U 277 both contain the name Asur, while U 276 carries the spelling ontsuar. It's believed that all three names may refer to the same person. U 277 forms part of the collection of Upplands runic inscriptions, offering glimpses into the lives and connections of these individuals.
