Byte-carved Runestone of Gudlög in Lilla Vilunda

The runestones, named 'Vilundas stenarna', are situated along the fornslingan near Gunnes gårds, Lilla Vilunda in Upplands Väsby. They were hidden underground for about 400 years until Rolf Boström discovered them in December 1971 while constructing Stallgatan. These stones are fashioned from ljusgrå granit. One stone, erected by Gudlög, bears a dragon motif in the rune band – the dragon's winding pattern resembling an eight. The runes, ranging between 5 to 8 cm in height, offer a clue when interpreted in nusvenska. We find that Gudlög named her husband on the runestone. A nearby burial site houses the runestones, while an unusually large bautasten, potentially Forkunn Kättilsson's grave marker, is unearthed in the family's ättebacke.
