These Stone Lions, mate, aren't your average pets - they're a pair of sandstone sculptures, crafted by the deft hands of our local artist, Paul Kupper. Each one sports a signature and date - 'P.Kupper' the hallmark, etched upon the muscular flanks of these 36-inch titans. These sparkling critters were gifted to the city by a chap named Henry Clay Payne, and placed atop two iron bridges, designed by the keen mind of a local bloke named Oscar Sanne, in 1897.
It don't end there - these lions, standing guard at the southern entrance of the park, have been keeping watch for well over a century. If we talk 'bout the bridges, they were part of the park's original design by the masterful Mr. Frederick Law Olmsted. In 1993, these lions got a check-up, and again in 2014, a fella driving a truck didn't see the invitation, decided to use a bridge as a driveway, causing a bit of a ruckus. But don't fret - the lions didn't take a single scratch; they still stand as proud as the day they were hewn from stone.
