Situated along Gotland's coast, Visby clings tight, separated by a narrow strait. Although the modern military protects the seas, not rulers, there's a stone-age mystery. It's a granite cube in the harbor, etched with a low-relief slumbering samurai, armed with a sword and wearing a helmet. Each dawn, the rest of the carving disappears, only to find the samurai lying there again, nobody knowing what happens in daylight. Seems these legends all lead to the same enigma, spinning quite a puzzler. The slab remains flat-topped, atop an undulating pedestal in a tiny park at the cliff's foot. The local yarns about Visby's ancient warriors suggest a time of tension. As the tales grew, it's thought that the king's father was no ordinary chap, perhaps even a cold-blooded conqueror. However, the queen's secrets kept the king's conquest designs a secret.
