Torre Picada

Torre Picada is a defensive tower situated at a height of 160 meters overlooking Port de Sóller, Mallorca. Constructed in the early 17th century after the attack of the corsair Otxalí in 1561, the tower was part of a surveillance and defense system designed by Joan Binimelis at the end of the 16th century. The tower is troncoconical in structure, made of stone and mortar, 11 meters tall with two floors and a terrace. A spiral staircase leads to the second floor, which was divided into dependencies and has two old windows.

The original entrance was on this floor, defended by a battlement. A staircase also leads to the terrace, which was adapted as a viewpoint. A cannon is still conserved at the terrace. Next to the tower, there is an aljub, which supplied water to the torrers. The tower belonged to the corps of carabiniers from 1867, who used it to watch for contraband. During the Spanish War, the tower was used to control possible aircraft from the Peninsula. The iron staircase still shows the marks to access comfortably to the first floor. In 1875, the tower was sold to the owner of the possession of the Port.
