Gran Hotel: a once-gilded palace turned cultural space

The Gran Hotel, located at Plaça d’en Weyler 3, in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, is part of the historic centre of the city. Designed by the renowned Lluís Domènech i Montaner and completed in 1903, the hotel was the first on the island to have a telephone and electricity supply. Originally, it was a haven for the wealthy and powerful, a symbol of luxury, until it was taken over by the State and underwent modifications that disfigured its original avant-garde Catalanist architectural character. Later, it was declared a site of cultural interest by the Ministerio de Cultura (Spain) in 2003 due to its faithful restoration and architectural interest. Today, it serves as a CaixaForum, one of a chain of artistic venues run by banking group La Caixa.
