A Medieval Fortress Watching Over Sicily's Coast: Torre delle Mandre

A Medieval Fortress Watching Over Sicily's Coast: More than just a tower, Torre delle Mandre has a captivating history as a strategic defense against pirate attacks.

Torre delle Mandre, popularly known as Torre Normanna, is a medieval architectural structure in Altavillese, Palermo. Contrary to common belief, the tower doesn't belong to the Norman era but hails from the Aragonese period, with historical records dating back to 1557. Positioned on Capo Crosso, between the territories of Altavilla Milicia and Trabia, this architectural marvel serves as an impressive coastal sentinel, its gaze extending from Capo Zafferano to Campofelice di Roccella. For centuries, it has stood as a formidable defense against the relentless pirate assaults originating from North Africa. Today, the tower is under private ownership, with well-preserved structural conditions. The land, at least until 1855, was part of the Caccamo commune. The tower and the surrounding area have been featured in a scene of the Italian comedy film 'Il 7 e l'8' by Ficarra e Picone.
