The Moses Mabhida Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, named after Moses Mabhida, a former general secretary of the South African Communist Party. It has hosted a variety of events, including concerts, cricket, soccer, golf, motorsports, and rugby union. The stadium was one of the host venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where it was referred to as "Durban Stadium" and hosted seven matches, including a semi-final.
The stadium is notable for its large arch, which is somewhat reminiscent of the Wembley Stadium arch. The arch is 350 metres long and 105 metres high, with its top rising 106 metres above the pitch. Inspired by the South African flag, the arch represents the once-divided nation coming together. It consists of a 5x5m steel hollow box weighing 2,600 tonnes. A funicular carries visitors from the north side of the stadium to a viewing platform at the top of the arch, which offers a view over the city and ocean.
The roof of the stadium is made of a 46,000 m2 Teflon-coated, glass-fibre membrane that produces a translucent glow when the stadium is lit. This roof covers 88% of the seats and is attached to the arch by 95mm diameter steel cables. The stadium's seating is adjustable, accommodating 55,500 for local matches and up to 75,000 for larger events. It also includes 120 corporate hospitality suites with 7,500 seats.
Beyond sports, the stadium has hosted significant cultural and political events. In 2011, it witnessed the biggest ever crowd for a cricket match on the African continent during a match between South Africa and India. In 2022, it was the site of the coronation of the newly appointed King Misuzulu, the first such coronation after Apartheid ended. Plans are underway for a R236 million upgrade to include a new Sky Car, a larger viewing platform with a glass "Air Walk", and a new big swing.
