Located at Calle Alemania 2, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Málaga) is a cultural initiative aimed at the diffusion of 20th and 21st century visual arts. The center is housed in the former Mercado de Mayoristas de Málaga, a building declared Bien de interés cultural with a total surface of 6000 m2. Out of this area, 2400 m2 were dedicated to exhibitions, providing one of the largest exhibition spaces among contemporary art centers.
The CAC Málaga was officially inaugurated and opened to the public in 2003. The exhibition hall was divided into five spaces: three for temporary exhibitions, one for the permanent collection, and one called "Espacio Proyectos," a multipurpose area for installations, workshop works, and specific acts. Throughout the years, the center has produced more than 130 individual exhibitions and a dozen group exhibitions, featuring works by internationally recognized artists such as Art & Language, Tony Cragg, Gerhard Richter, Louise Bourgeois, Anish Kapoor, Alex Katz, Lawrence Weiner, Kara Walker, Roni Horn, Yoshitomo Nara, Thomas Hirschhorn, Julian Opie, Santiago Sierra, Vik Muniz, Erwin Wurm, William Kentridge, Luis Gordillo, Richard Deacon, Marcel Dzama, Jerónimo Elespe, Per Barclay, Raymond Pettibon, Jaume Plensa, and Tracey Emin.
The museum also featured around half a hundred exhibitions of Spanish artists, alongside group projects involving a hundred emerging artists. Its permanent collection consists of approximately 400 pieces owned or lent by institutions and individuals. In 2024, the center ceased its activity to undergo a transformation process, integrating the building into the new Museo Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (MUCAC) as the sede Mayoristas.
