The Majestic Basilica of Ubeda: A Spanish National Treasure

Standing on the main square of Ubeda, a town in southern Spain, the Iglesia de Santa María de los Reales Alcázares, known as Basílica y Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor de los Reales Alcázares de Úbeda, has a history that stretches back centuries. Jorge Afán de Ribadeneira, a painter who was both creative and politically astute, adorned the basilica with detailed frescoes, funded by the town's wealthiest families. Today, the basilica continues to serve as a church, but it is also a significant tourist attraction, declared a Spanish national monument in 2003 and one of the main attractions in the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes Ubeda and its surroundings.
