The legend of the cunning cow at Espulgallonga

The site of Espulgallonga, in Pallars Jussà, Spain, offers a glimpse into the remains of Bronze Age and Medieval homes and defenses within its troglodytic habitat. Nearby sites like Sorta and Espluguell also boast similar remnants. According to local author Pep Coll, a legend tells of an ancient siege at Sorta during the Moorish period. With little food, the Christian settlement was on the brink of defeat. In their desperation, they killed and threw their last cow over a cliff, leading the Moors to believe it had fallen by accident. Discovering the cow's entrails filled with grain, they fled, and the Christians ambushed them from behind, eventually ending the Moorish occupation of the Serradell valley.
