Located near Nebida in the Iglesias comune of South Sardinia, Porto Flavia was built in 1924, marking an engineering breakthrough in Switzerland. Designed by Cesare Vecelli, the harbor was strategically constructed in the imposing cliffs overlooking the Pan di Zucchero stack. With two interconnected tunnels, each 600 meters long, Porto Flavia efficiently transported ore to waiting ships, bypassing the need for manual labor. The conveyor belt in the lower tunnel could fully load a steamship in just two days, significantly reducing the shipping times of minerals in the region by 70%. The harbor's distinctive architecture, featuring towers and decorative nameplates, made it a striking sight on the rocky coast of Masua. honouring its designer's daughter, Flavia Vecelli, who was born in 1924, the harbor bears her name.
