Father Luigi, the Savior of Scraps: Italy's Clergyman with a Nearly broken Bank

Who was Luigi Cerutti? A priest with an unconventional approach to saving the savings and dreams of the locals, all while wrestling poverty in Gambarare and Murano, Italy.

Born on the 14th of March, 1865 in Gambarare, Luigi Cerutti took on the mantle of a priest and settled in Santa Maria e Donato, Murano, from 1897 to 1920. It was during his tenure that he initiated the first obligatory savings cassa operaia in Murano back in 1898, a groundbreaking move in Italy. In 1901, he introduced insured mandatory savings cassas, and in 1903, he established a Catholic cooperative for consumption. His aim was to help the working class save their pennies, invest in their business ventures, and combat poverty. Alas, his later projects, much like the fragile glass of Murano, disintegrated due to a crisis in the vetraria industry.
