The paschal lamb over the 12th-century gate

The Porte Saint-Pierre is the oldest monument in Firminy, a small town in eastern France. Built in the 12th century, it is the only remaining brick work of the church Saint-Pierre that was destroyed in 1932. On its lintel, you can observe the Paschal lamb, angels, Saint Martin to the left, and Saint Peter to the right. The lamb, a symbol of the Resurrection, is a common motif in Christian art and is thought to have been included on the gate to reflect the Christian influence in the region. The exact identity of the builders and the purpose of the gate remain a mystery, with theories suggesting it may have served a fortified function.
