The 1799 Martello Tower: A British-built fortification in Menorca, Spain

Torre de la Mola, constructed in 1799 during the British occupation of Menorca, is a Martello tower. Captain Robert d’Arcy, during this time, informed General Fox of the arming of this tower. The structure is made of stone and mortar, covered on the outside with limestone stones. The tower features a sentry box on both the top and bottom exterior, surrounded by two rectangular profile cordons. Like typical Martello towers, it comprises three floors.

The ground floor was used to store food, ammunition, and gunpowder. The middle floor was the soldiers' quarters. The upper floor was used for combat and had space for one or more cannons. There is a gun port halfway up, pointing toward the Freus, which was built after the construction of the La Mola fortress in the second half of the 19th century. There is also an entrance at ground level. In 2010, a comprehensive renovation of the tower was carried out, reconstructing the balcony over the entrance and interior divisions.
