Early Christian church in Menorca, Spain

The Basilica del Rei is an archaeological site, corresponding to a paleochristian building used for worship. The excavation of the site began in 1964, revealing a basilica with three separated nauses, each with columns. The mosaics found at the site have similarities with those in the Synagogue of Hamman-Lif in North Africa. The site also features a circular baptismal piscina, remains of the altar and the column supporting it, and additional annexes that suggest the possibility that it could have been a monastery. The Basilica of the Rei shares constructive similarities with the Basilica of Fornás de Torelló, and it is believed that it was built after the Roman conquest of Byzantium, in the first third of the 6th century. The site was discovered in 1888, although the systematic excavation did not begin until 1964.
