Northern Lights of Umeå: The Controversial Dance of Steel at Umeå University

Norra Skenet, a stainless steel public art sculpture by Swedish artist Ernst Nordin, adorns the Umeå University campus. Constructed in 1967 and resembling the Aurora Borealis, the sculpture features built-in spotlights. Despite its move to its current location in 1995, following the construction of the Teachers' Training Hall, Norra Skenet continues to be a symbol for Umeå University students and staff during events. However, its tranquility belies a history marred by controversy. Finnish sculptor Eila Hiltunen accused Norra Skenet of closely resembling her Sibelius Monument, yet she ultimately chose not to pursue legal action.
