The Black Cat Roundabout in Bedfordshire, England marks the intersection of the A1 and A421 (formerly A428). Long before its current existence, the roundabout took its name from the Black Cat Garage that operated in the 1920s on its site. However, that was just the beginning of this intriguing story.

The roundabout has undergone several transformations since its inception in 2004, with a third reconstruction currently underway. This latest upgrade aims to replace the roundabout with a free-flowing junction, towards which it is referred as the 'Black Cat Junction'.

The central piece of the roundabout is the metal sculpture of a black cat, which was installed in January 2004 based on the original Black Cat Garage emblem produced by local fabricators like Watson & Brookman. This installation was more of a community-led initiative rather than an official highways project. The sculpture was relocated during reconstruction works associated with the Great Barford bypass between 2005 and 2006 and replaced with a larger version after the completion of the works.

However, the sculpture's life has not been smooth. It was stolen from its location in June 2007 and has faced vandalism and damage. Over the years, the sculpture has been mysteriously relocated and has effectively disappeared from the roundabout only to reappear in a nearby location. One instance of its reappearance was following a note left nearby, which led to its discovery in April 2009 in Upper Caldecote.

Two smaller kitten figures were added to the base of the main statue after its vandalism in May 2019, but it suffered another incident of vandalism involving white paint in May 2023.

As of August 2025, the sculpture is in storage during the construction of a new three-level grade-separated junction, part of the wider upgrading program between Cambridge and Milton Keynes. It remains uncertain whether the sculpture will be returned to the upgraded junction upon completion.
