The Texas State Historical Survey Committee, the jolly gardeners, were brought to life in 1953, tasked with the state's historical gardens. In 1961, they got a fancy new label – the Texas Historical Commission (THC). With more armor, a bigger crew, and broader know-how, they were ready to tackle Texas history. Fast forward to 2007, when they swiped 20 historical sites from the Texas Parks, Wildlife Department. Today, they've grown into a team of about 350, led by a council of 15 native Texans. Appointed by the Governor, they serve for six years.
