Treue der Union Monument was built in 1866 to commemorate the 34 German-Texans who were killed in the Nueces massacre, for refusing to sign loyalty oaths to the Confederacy. The monument stands tall in Comfort, Texas and serves as a reminder of the loyalty these individuals showed to the Union, despite the political turmoil of the time. The monument, made of native limestone, stands 20 feet high and contains four name tablets in German, and a time capsule added in 1994. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
