The ten-story Brown Building on Colorado Street

Completed in 1938, the Brown Building served as a hub for significant companies in 20th-century Austin.

The Brown Building is a ten-story office and residential tower located in Downtown Austin, Texas, at the southwest corner of 8th Street and Colorado Street. Standing 137 feet tall, the building was completed in 1938 and bears the name of its developer, businessman and philanthropist Herman Brown.

Throughout the 20th century, the building housed several significant companies. The Texas Broadcasting Corporation (KTBC) operated from the building for many years around World War II, employing humorist Cactus Pryor and future governor John Connally. Additionally, the engineering company Brown & Root maintained its headquarters in the building at one time.

In the early 2000s, the building underwent a renovation and was converted into high-end lofts. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and continues to stand as a notable part of the Austin skyline.
