A Renewing Escape: Hot Wells, Texas's Hidden Oasis

Nestled along the San Antonio River in the heart of Texas, Hot Wells once offered a refreshing sanctuary of healing and relaxation. Join us on a journey to uncover the enchanting past of this forgotten oasis.

hot Wells, Texas, a once vibrant land, is now a tranquil haven, cradled affectionately by the San Antonio River. This place was home to the Coahuiltecan people, marking a rich history upon their arrival. The Spanish added a unique chapter, leading to the remarkable discovery of an artesian well in 1892, on the land of the San Antonio State Hospital. This well descended a fascinating 1750 feet, yielding an astonishing 180,000 gallons of water every day.

However, the water had a peculiar warmth, radiating at 103-104 degrees Fahrenheit, with a sultry sulphur scent. Yet, the visionary Charles Scheuermeyer saw past this seeming obstacle, recognizing the hidden gifts in this unique water. Chemist G.H conducted an analysis, revealing the water offered relief from several ailments, such as blood poisoning, kidney and liver issues, and rheumatism. The healing powers of this water soon gained legendary status.

In 1893, the enterprising McClellan Shacklett took over the waters' lease, transforming the site into a grand resort. He constructed a luxurious bathhouse and a grand 3-story hotel. The bathhouse offered a mesmerizing experience, featuring a large pool filled with the mystical sulphur-infused water, stations for private rejuvenation, and even solitary soaks. A nearby pavilion housed a restaurant. By 1902, Hot Sulphur Baths had become a renowned resort. Today, Hot Wells, like a forsaken melody from a bygone era, stands as a testament to a time long past.
