The Luminescent Secret of the Forgotten Qubba

The Luminescent Secret of the Forgotten Qubba

In the core of Marrakesh, a hidden glimmer of ancient power whispers through a concealed door

In the heart of Marrakesh - a place steeped in history - lies a concealed treasure, one hidden amongst the bustling lanes of the Marrakech medina. This hidden gem is the Almoravid Qubba, better known as the Qubbat al-Ba'diyyin or Qubbat al-Barudiyyin. It differs from common buildings, for it is an undiscovered relic of a preceding era, built by the Almoravid ruler Ali ibn Yusuf during the 12th century. Scholars have four plausible theories regarding the year of its creation, with the truth tantalizingly elusive.

The Qubba was a pavilion where faithfuls performed ritual ablutions before prayer, and it stood alongside the Ben Youssef Mosque as a symbol of the Almoravids' authority. The mosque exists to this day, yet the Qubba was buried under 7 to 8 meters of debris, a testament to the inexorable passage of time. However, in the obscure recesses of its detailed walls and the elaborate patterns of its decorations, the Qubba shines with a tantalizing glimmer of a long-lost power waiting to be rediscovered.
