The hillfort that once was a formidable stronghold

The hillfort, located near Lukštai – Obeliai, approximately 700 meters away from Lukštų, is built on a hill, in a plateau in a southern-western slope, with dimensions of 45x30 meters. The hillfort is dated from the Iron Age to the Early Middle Ages and was fortified with earthenworks. A 4-meter wall, from which a 5-meter wall protrudes, 70 cm high, surrounds the hillfort. Another 35-meter wall, 1.2 meters high, 6 meters wide, with a protrusion 1.7 meters high, is found 1.7 meters high on the top. There are characteristic pit houses inside the hillfort. A 0.5-hectare dwelling site, where pottery has been found, is located within the hillfort. The hillfort was first studied in 1972 by the Institute of History. Lukštų piliakalnis was protected by the Lithuanian Republic's Cultural Heritage Committee in 1998. The terrain where the hillfort is located has an area of 13,000 square meters.
