The ancient hillfort dating back a thousand years on the banks of the Ventis

Located in the Kalniškių region, 1.3 kilometers from Kuršėnai Crypt, on the Užventis-Šaukėnai-Kuršėnai road, lies Biržės kalnu, an oval-shaped hillfort situated on the right bank of the Ventis River. The hillfort, 23x19 meters in size, is defined by a 4-meter-high outer wall, 24 meters wide, a 40x7x3-meter moat surrounding it, and an inner wall that is 1.5 meters tall behind the outer wall. Archaeological excavations conducted in 1998 revealed a 6-hectare residential area dating back to the first half of the 1st millennium AD. Noteworthy artifacts such as pottery, stone tools, and human bones were found, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the site.
