The 13th-century ruins of Château du Wineck

Located in the commune of Katzenthal in the Haut-Rhin département of France, the ruined Château du Wineck was constructed during the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Château du Wineck is a ruined castle in the commune of Katzenthal in the Haut-Rhin département of France. Constructed during the 13th and 14th centuries, the castle stands on a granitic rocky outcrop and is surrounded by vineyards.

The keep of the castle is 20 metres high with an almost square plan of 7 metres by 7.5 metres. A modern external staircase on the western side provides access to the first floor via a 19th-century entrance, while a modern interior staircase gives access to higher levels. A latrine remains on the third floor to the north, and the original parapet has been restored.

Historical features of the site include a gargoyle in the south-eastern corner of the roof and a horseshoe-shaped enceinte that enclosed the keep from the north. Originally, the second floor was entered via a high door in a gothic arch off a walkway in the south wall, which is today a wooden balcony. The castle was acquired in 1866 and restored starting in 1972.
