The history of Château de Buchenek

Located in the Haut-Rhin département of France, the Château de Buchenek is a 13th-century manor house that served as a factory before becoming a municipal museum.

The Château de Buchenek is a castle in the commune of Soultz-Haut-Rhin in the Haut-Rhin département of France. Dating from the second half of the 13th century, it was altered in the 14th century and again in the second half of the 16th century. The logis, which follows a rectangular plan, possibly still dates from the 13th century at its lower level.

First recorded in 1251, the castle was restored after the Thirty Years' War and eventually sold as national property. During the 19th century, the building was used as a factory. The town of Soultz-Haut-Rhin purchased the castle in 1976 and undertook a significant restoration of the site.

Since 1990, the castle has housed the municipal museum. It has been listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1984.
