The green-roofed 500-year-old battle site

A green roof over a rugged landscape hides a much older story. This castle in the hillside has seen a battle that took place nearly five centuries ago.

Castello della Lucertola, a castle dating back to the 10th century, sits atop a hill in Apricale, Italy. The castle, once a defensive position and later a feudal and signorial residence, has a green roof that contrasts the rugged landscape. But the green roof is not just a decorative addition. It is a remnant of a historic battle that took place nearly 500 years ago. In 1523, a fierce battle was fought between the forces of Bartolomeo Doria and those of Agostino Grimaldi for control of the castle. The battle damaged the castle, and a new roof was added to protect the structure.
