The Doria castle in Dolceacqua is an Italian castle located in the Val Nervia, Province of Imperia. This medieval fortress was originally constructed in the 12th century, albeit by the Counts of Ventimiglia, and the Doria family expanded its fortifications in the 14th century, facing feuds and political intrigue with the Guelphs and Ghibellines. Under the rule of Stefano Doria, the castle was transformed into a grand residence, complete with opulently adorned and frescoed rooms.
The Doria family, vassals of Genoa since 1270, eventually ceded the castle to Duke Carlo II of Savoy in 1526, making it a vassal of the Duchy of Savoy. The castle served as a strategic center of power until it was partially destroyed during the War of Austrian Succession in 1744 and abandoned by the Doria family. Today, the restored castle continues to dominate the landscape of Dolceacqua, hosting events and ceremonies.
