The Göteborg Statue: Jonas Alströmer

Statues are powerful symbols, and the one dedicated to Jonas Alströmer, the father of Swedish industry according to Rudolf Kjellén, stands tall in Göteborg at Lilla Torget. John Börjeson cast the statue in bronze, and Torben Grut created the pedestal of red granite. Erected on December 28, 1905, the statue stands at 4 meters tall, with a total height of 6 meters including the pedestal. Jonas Alströmer, depicted wearing knickerbockers, a justaucorps, a waistcoat, an allongeperuk, and a tricorne hat, is seen leaning on a staff. The pedestal, shaped as a series of steps, is crowned by four weather vane heads. The statue was a commission from a committee, led by Gustaf Lagerbring, and Rudolf Kjellén gave the invocation speech at the unveiling ceremony.
