The Great Pit, also known as the Great Chasm, was formed by a sudden collapse at Falu copper mine in 1687. This catastrophic event, caused by extensive mining and reckless extraction of ore, surprisingly left no casualties. Known as Stora Stöten in Swedish, it is depicting on a stamp from the I Dalom series, issued in 1973.
