Hauteville-lès-Dijon's Hilltop Fort: The Ominous Overwatch

Immerse yourself in the history of a strategic fortress, perched on a 250-meter hilltop, overlooking Hauteville-lès-Dijon and guarding the roads to Paris. Delve into the enigmatic tale of war and cunning.

In the late 19th century, between 1875 and 1883, a formidable addition to the defenses of Dijon emerged - the Hauteville fort. With a touch of dark humor, it perched itself on a 250-meter high hill, keeping an watchful eye on the town square, and casting a curious gaze over the route to Paris. Its mission, hidden amongst the hills, was to fill in the gaps between Fort de la Motte-Giron and Fort d'Asnières, all the while keeping a vigilant eye out for any potential enemy paths.

Little did it know it was also offering support to the defenses of those very forts. From its strategic vantage point, its defensive reach extended as far as the valley of Val-Suzon, the heights of Prénois and Étales, and the crests of Bois Ventoux, Des Grands Champs, and Chène d'Observation. Two undefended artillery annexes added to its arsenal. In 1914, it was classified as a third-tier fort, capable of accommodating its campaign troops. In a twist of irony, its main armament lay out in the open.

In 1940, it faced an unexpected visitor - the German forces, under the command of Lieutenant Lionel Pracht, as war loomed over the horizon.
