Born in Réthoville in 1811, Marie Ravenel, a Normandy poetess notable in her own right, moved to Fermanville at the tender age of 30. The poetess, ever residing in Fermanville, breathed her last on the 8th of March in 1893. A local group, the Poetical Society of Cherbourg, undertook the task of raising funds for a headstone to memorialize her, which was ultimately unveiled in 1905. This headstone, christened the Stèle de Marie Ravenel, was crafted by Élisa Bloch and architect Mesnage, reaching a towering 4.5 meters tall, sculpted from rose granite.
Crafted as a menhir, the Stèle de Marie Ravenel also encloses a bronze medallion, which houses an image of the poetess at the age of 40. This memorial, the Stèle de Marie Ravenel, can be found at Place Marie-Ravenel near the parking entrance, along Chemin des Argillères, in Fermanville. Designated as a monument historique, according to records, it remains a testament to her life and work.
