Elected by universal suffrage in 1895, Eleuterio Maisonnave became Alicante's first alcalde. Today, he is best remembered as the founder of Alicante's first savings bank. But then, and for 27 years, Maisonnave was also a minister in the First Spanish Republic.

Eleuterio Maisonnave, born in Alicante in 1838, was the first alcalde of Alicante elected by universal suffrage. He also served as a minister in the First Spanish Republic, and was a co-founder of the first savings bank in Alicante. The statue of Maisonnave, sculpted by Vicente Bañuls, was inaugurated in 1895 and installed in Avenida Maisonnave, where it remains today. The pedestal, created by José Guardiola Picó, completes the statue.
