The English Cemetery: A Peaceful Sanctuary and Prelude to History in Málaga

The English Cemetery in Málaga, also known as the Anglican Cemetery or Cemetery of St George, is the oldest non-Roman Catholic Christian cemetery on mainland Spain. Established by decree with a Royal Order by Ferdinand VII on 11 April 1830, it was an aspiration brought to fruition by the tireless efforts of British Consul William Mark, who was instrumental in its establishment.

Covering over 8,000 m2 (2.0 acres) and containing more than 1,000 graves, the English Cemetery in Málaga is also a botanical garden boasting a variety of unique tree and plant species. The cemetery holds a significant place in Málaga’s historical landscape, and in 2005, the cemetery gatehouse underwent renovation, now housing a small Visitors’ Centre and gift shop.
