The Enchanted Royal Vault of Tunisia's Noble Kings: Tourbet Al Bai

In the enchanted heart of ancient Tunis, fairy-tale charm weaves around Tourbet Al Bai, a grand mausoleum that cradles the relics of Tunisia's royal family, whispering tales of both glory and mystery.

In the heart of Tunisia's mystical medina, a fairy-tale tomb named Tourbet Al Bai has been the guardian of the royal lineage for centuries. Erected by the wise King Ali II ibn Hussein, who reigned from 1759-1782, it presents as the largest funerary monument in all of Tunis. Draped in green tiles shaped like lush turtle shells and sandstone facades, the structure effortlessly blends the elegance of Italian and Ottoman architectural styles.

Stepping inside, one finds oneself in a series of magical chambers, each housing the tomb of a member of the royal family or a faithful servant. The Beys' chamber, the most grandiose in the complex, mirrors the opulence of the Ottoman Empire, with a central cupola flanked by four demi-cupolas on either side, and four more in the corners. Marble marquetry, vibrant in hue, adorns the walls and pillars, reaching a magnificent 2.5 metres in height, while the caps of the cupolas are intricately sculpted with plaster.Yet, beyond this beauty lies a melancholy whisper - over three decades of neglect have left the roof structures and rich decorations in decay. In the year 2023, the National Heritage Institute embarked upon a noble quest to restore Tunisia's priceless treasure, ensuring its preservation for countless generations to come.
