Built in 895, Castell de Besora was the stronghold of the Besora family, who garrisoned it during the wars of the time. The castle passed to different branches of the family, including the Canet family. The castle was demolished in 1839 by the soldiers of the Carlists, but only the castle was demolished, not the church. The church dedicated to Santa Maria was renovated in the 15th and 17th centuries. The portal and the ull de bou on the west wall were built in 1590. The church stopped being a parish in 1759. The castle features remains of the walls and pavements first documented in excavations in the last years.
