The castle at Calaf dominates the hill above the town and was declared a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional in the 12th or 13th century. It controlled the town and the surrounding plains, where two important communication routes intersected - one running north to south through Alt Urgell and Solsonès, and a ramal of the Via Augusta passing through Els Prats de Rei. It is considered one of the most significant fortifications in the comarca, similar to the nearby Castell de Mirambell.
