The bronze statue that stood for public education

It sat in Madrid, on a plaza with the same name. But this statue walked miles to tell the story of Claudio Moyano, a 19th-century statesman who helped shape the country's school system.

The Monument to Claudio Moyano, an instance of public art in Madrid, stands on the Plaza del Emperador Carlos V. Designed by Agustín Querol, and unveiled in 1900, it is a bronze statue representing Claudio Moyano on top of a tall stone pedestal. The lower part of the pedestal shows four bronze reliefs, depicting scenes from Moyano's life and career. His contributions to the education system are commemorated in these artworks, footnotes of a man who walked more than just the city miles. The statue was originally located at the Plaza de Atocha but was later moved to the Plaza de Luca de Tena and eventually gardens in front of a school.
