El Astronauta is a sculpture created by Galician sculptor Francisco Leiro in the year 2001. It is located at the Glorieta del Universo, a roundabout in Valdemoro, Community of Madrid, Spain. The Glorieta del Universo is part of the series of artistic interventions in public space promoted by the Valdemoro City Council at the beginning of the 21st century. The sculpture represents an astronaut with a spacesuit, in a hieratic and tall posture, characteristic of Leiro’s style.
The astronaut, with monumental proportions, stands at 4.10 meters in height and weighs 2,600 kilos of inox steel. The Fundición Capa company, specialized in artistic sculpture, executed the casting in the Madrid municipality of Arganda del Rey. The choice of an astronaut as the sculptural motif in the Glorieta del Universo is not accidental: it references the explorer spirit of humanity and contemporary scientific and technological advances, in line with the name of the place.
The sculpture stands out for its brilliant metal finish, which reflects light and highlights its presence in the urban environment.
