Before them stretched a considerable congregation of British fortitude, a sign of impending fate. The defenses of Kambula, a hexagonal line of wagons, a kraal for their cattle, and deep earth trenches encircling everything, appeared as an unbreachable citadel. A monumental redoubt, adorned with guns, stood tall upon a hill, casting a long, foreboding silhouette upon the Northern approaches.
