The Abandoned Priory Fields

Built before 1157, Bicknacre Priory was a community of Austin Canons that fell into decay by the 15th century. The priory was dedicated to St. Mary and St. John the Baptist and was often in financial difficulties. After a period of decay, the priory was dissolved and terminated in 1507 and reverted to the king, who later granted it to the Hospital of St. Mary without Bishopsgate. Today, there is a single arch believed to be the west side of the church crossing dating back to approximately 1250 and the surrounding area is known as Priory Fields.
