Rochester Castle, overlooking the River Medway, stands as a testament to the city's past power and its tumultuous history. Replacing the abandoned first castle following a rebellion led by Bishop Odo, the new stone structure was built by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, between 1087 and 1089. Archbishop William de Corbeil was granted the castle by King Henry I in 1127, and it was during his rule that the massive keep that still dominates the castle today was constructed. While the castle bears the marks of a bygone era, the whispers of its rebellious past linger on its walls.
