The Resurrected and Restored: Corbera d'Ebre's Neoclassical Church

The Església Vella de Sant Pere, a neoclassical church in Corbera d'Ebre, Terra Alta, Spain, was resurrected and restored after eight decades of disuse by the Association of el Poble Vell - Corbera d'Ebre. In 2010, six to eight individuals were discovered buried in a common grave within the church. The church, which arose in the late 18th century with funds from 'diners d'Amèrica', replaced a destroyed Romanesque church destroyed in 1938 by the Francoist army. A disagreement between the association and the council over the evaluation and preservation of the old town and the church made the restoration process complex. Nevertheless, the restoration is now complete, although the original vaults and towers are no longer standing.
