San Asenjo

Hidden in the Spanish countryside, San Asenjo was once a place of 25 buildings. By 1981, the inhabitants had all disappeared. The only sounds were the crickets. Today, the Spanish government considers San Asenjo 'abandoned'. On the map, this site lies in a field, on the border of the small town of Espeja de San Marcelino. Once, it was a lived-in place. Today, it's a memory. The farmhouses stand quiet, the doors gaping open. The church, a basic brick building, remains, as does the schoolhouse and the watermill. There's no one here to shepherd the sheep or play the organ on Sundays, just silence and wind. San Asenjo might appear a forgotten place, but it hasn't collapsed. It's merely waiting for the people to return.
