Mysteries in Arbul: Unraveling a Castle's Name and Past

Arbul Castle, located in the village of the same name, lies at the southwest end of a careena descending from Montllobar. First mentioned in 1077, it was bequeathed to the Hospitalers of the Comanda de Susterris by the Count Arnau Mir de Pallars Jussà. The castle's name and derivation are subjects of controversy among scholars, who suggest it might not be Arbull but Arbul or Erbul. According to Joan Coromines, the name may originate from Basque words erb- (rabbit) and lohi (lot), forming Erbuloi (llot de la llebre or rabbit lot). Between Arbul Castle and the Mare de Déu d'Arbul, remnants of a medieval village can be seen. Today, the castle's walls still stand, offering a glimpse into a time long past.
