The Enduring Fortress of Tragedy: Zuhalmendi Redoubt

Constructed as a military fortification during the campaign of 1793-1794, the Redoubt of Zuhalmendi was one of several redoubts built to defend against enemy attacks. Despite being captured by the French, the fortress withstood the assaults, serving as a testament to the resilience of these structures. The redoubt was part of a system that included other redoubts such as Louis XIV, Bertuste, Bayonnette, and des Émigrés. However, time has taken its toll on the structure, with thirteen of these fortifications, including Zuhalmendi, being inscribed as historical monuments. Despite this status, little efforts have been made to preserve or maintain these age-old relics of conflict, which stand as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that occurred.
