Pius IV's Hidden Haven: The Ninth Vatican Abode

Nestled discreetly along the Vatican's Viale dell'Aquilone lies the Pius IV House. It's not an art studio, but what hides within its walls has puzzled many a Renaissance scholar.

Cloaked in mystery, the Pius IV House, once known as Casina del Boschetto, resides quietly in the Vatican's Viale dell'Aquilone. Originally commissioned by Pope Paul IV in 1558, this scholarly sanctuary received a makeover under the guidance of Renaissance wizard, Pirro Ligorio. By 1562, under the rule of Pope Pius IV, the House had transformed, featuring an elliptical courtyard, a pair of impressive gates, and a charming loggia, punctuated by an elegant fountain. The intricate stucco sculptures adorning the outside still beguile and bewitch those who chance upon it.
