Oriolo Romano's Palazzo Altieri: From a Humble Chapel to a Lustrous Marble

Witness the dramatic transformation of a 16th-century chapel into an opulent marble palace in Palazzo Altieri, Oriolo Romano.

Palazzo Altieri in Oriolo Romano, a town in the Viterbo province of Italy, is a historic manor house. Built in 1579 by the Santacroce family and purchased by the Altieris in 1674, the palace has undergone numerous expansions and transformations over the centuries, including the addition of wings, a tower, and a clock on the roof. Today, Palazzo Altieri exudes the opulence of the Bourbon kings of Spain, in sharp contrast to its former ties with the Popes of Rome. Tourists from the north of Italy have only recently started visiting, but its modern life does not fit easily into the brief modern history of the region, with trucks full of Italians working on the highway in 2004. To find the palace, follow the signs that say 'Palazzo Altieri.' The park and stables are off-limits.
