The Castle di Isola Farnese

The Castle di Isola Farnese

A medieval palace in Rome that became a self-sufficient island, owned by popes and emperors before being discovered by modern visitors

The Castello di Isola Farnese, built in the 13th century, was a palace baronial. It remained in the Orsini family for more than a century, then passed to the Farnese family in 1545 when Pope Paul III sold it to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. It was owned by the Farnese family until it was sold to the Camera Apostolica in 1653. The castle is now a popular spot for tourists who want to see a piece of Rome's medieval history, and for locals who want to escape the city and enjoy a small piece of nature on an island in the Tiber.
